Artworks in this gallery
- Gold pendant, Egypt — Jewellery such as this filigree pendant reflects the superb craftsmanship of goldsmiths working in Egypt and Syria during the Fatimid period. This pendant was fitted with enamel and semi-precious stones. The colourful enamel plaque may have been imported from Byzantium and attached separately.
- Ewer, Egypt — This delicate ewer is just 2 mm thick, and is covered with carved designs. The body is decorated on both sides with the motif of a bird alighting on the back of what seems to be a gazelle. This scene is surrounded by scrolls of palmettes and the whole design is set in a frame, as though covered by a textile.
- Façade, al-Aqmar Mosque, Cairo, Egypt (1125) — Built during the caliphate of al-Amir, this mosque is constructed of brick with stone facing and heavily decorated with inscriptions and sculptural features.
