Frozen in Sound — 3D Virtual Gallery by Aadi Handve
Music is strongly connected to memory. A single song can instantly take us back to a person, a place, a feeling, or a specific period of our lives. It has the ability to preserve moments that might otherwise fade with time. Album covers work in a similar way. They are more than just artwork used to represent an album—they are visual expressions of its identity, emotions, themes, and cultural context. Before we even hear the first song, a cover can create a mood, introduce a story, or give us a glimpse into the artist’s world. Our exhibition explores the stories behind selected album covers and looks beyond their visual appearance. Each cover has been created within a particular moment, shaped by the artist’s experiences, influences, ideas, and emotions.

- Kendrick Lamar — Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers — The cover presents Kendrick in an intimate domestic space, holding his child while wearing a crown of thorns, with a gun tucked into his waistband and his partner and another child behind him. The contrast is what makes the image powerful. The crown represents the burden of being seen as a moral or cultural figure, while the gun represents the violence and survival mentality that exists underneath that public image. Instead of presenting Kendrick as a flawless “king,” the photograph places his contradictions directly in front of us. The unfinished room and ordinary family setting strip away the celebrity image and bring him back to his most private identity: a father, partner, and flawed individual. For an exhibition about memory and identity, the cover works as a portrait of a person caught between who the world expects him to be and who he actually is. The album itself deals heavily with trauma, family, accountability, healing and the rejection of the “savior” role placed upon Kendrick.
- J. Cole — The Fall-Off — The cover is a photograph of Cole’s first home studio, taken by him when he was 15. The small table, beat machine, chair, and his mother’s CD collection preserve the exact environment where he first began making music. What makes the image powerful is its ordinariness. There is no portrait of a superstar just a quiet room filled with the objects that existed before the fame. The empty chair almost becomes a symbol of the 15-year-old Cole who once sat there dreaming of becoming an artist. The cover therefore creates a full-circle moment: an album about potentially stepping away from music begins with an image of where the journey started. The past isn't represented through nostalgia alone; it becomes the foundation of his present identity
- Xscape by Michael Jackson — The album was released on the 9th of May 2014. It consists of 8 previously unrecorded tracks that were originally recorded by the Artist Michael Jackson himself during the spam of 1980 to 1999. Though the album Michael Jackson expresses experiences from his own life of wanting to be free and having control over his own life rather than others choosing what's best for him. It majorly speaks about escaping from reality where everyone is trying to control his Life. The picture in the album is of Michael Jackson with a celestial ring round him showing him from a different dimension. He is shown as a timeless, universal force of music that goes beyond ordinary life. It shows how he wished he were free from everyone trying to control his life and the deep need to want to set his mind free.
- SOS BY SZA — The SOS album cover recreates a famous 1997 photograph of Princess Diana. At the time, the photograph showed Diana alone on a yacht, but after her death a week later, its meaning changed. It became connected to her final days, showing how time can change the way we remember an image. SZA chose this image because she was drawn to its feeling of isolation. From her perspective, she transforms Diana’s existing memory into something personal: a person alone in the ocean, paired with the title SOS, suggesting vulnerability and a need for help. In this way, SZA takes an image shaped by the past and gives it a new meaning in the present. The cover becomes a meeting point between Diana’s memory, SZA’s personal emotions, and the audience’s interpretation.
