• Isenheim Altarpiece, Matthias Grunewald 1514. Oil and tempera on limewood panel 269 x 307 cm (About 105.9 x 120.9 in) (2026) — The painting shows Jesus hanging on the cross wall Mary, Mary, Magdalene, and St. John react to his death around him. Greenwald's visual choices make the scene feel especially Physical and emotional. The oversized figure of Christ, twisted body and the unnatural green and grey tones of his skin make his suffering impossible to overlook. These choices are significant because the altar peace was created for the monastery of Saint Anthony, where people suffering from illness were cared for. Seeing Christ's body represented as damaged and vulnerable may have allowed viewers to connect their own physical suffering with Christ. Rather than presenting Jesus as distant or idolized, Greenwald uses the visual design to make him relatable to people experiencing pain themselves. This makes the artwork especially effective within my exhibition because it demonstrates how an artist's choice in color proportion, and the representation of the body can change the viewers' understanding of who Jesus is, and what his suffering means.
• Christ Carrying the Cross, Tiziano Vecellio 1565. Oil on canvas 67 x 77 cm (about 26.4 x 30.3 in) (2026) — The painting shows Jesus carrying the cross, while an older man helps him with a peaceful landscape stretching into the background. The bright colors of the figures, clothing contrast with the softer colors of the landscape, immediately drawing attention to Jesus and the older man. The large cross also creates a strong diagonal line that leads the viewer toward Jesus and emphasizes the physical burden he is carrying. At the same time, the calm landscape contrasts with a difficult scene, creating a sense of peace alongside suffering. This contrast connects to the religious context of the painting because Jesus carrying the cross represents his sacrifice before the crucifixion, while the older man's assistance introduces the idea of compassion and human connection.The combination of color composition and setting allows the scene to communicate both the physical suffering of Jesus and the spiritual meaning associated with his sacrifice.
• El Greco, Christ Embracing the Cross, 1602. 108 cm x 78 cm. Oil on canvas (2026) — The painting shows Jesus holding across while looking upward, with the crown of thorns, emphasizing the physical and emotional weight of the photo. El Greco creates a strong visual contrast between the dark background and the lighter tones of Jesus's face, hands and clothing, making him the immediate focus of the artwork.His upward gaze also directs the viewers attention toward his face and creates a sense of spiritual connection despite the suffering shown in the scene. The limited and dramatic use of color supports this contrast by making Jesus appear almost illuminated against the darkness. This is especially important in the context of El Greco religious paintings where unusual proportions, expressive figures and dramatic color were used to create an emotional and spiritual experience for the viewer. Rather than simply showing the physical act carrying the cross, the visual choices encourage the viewer to see Jesus as both suffering and spiritually accepting his fate.
• Antonio Ciseri, The Transportation of Christ's Body to the Tomb, 1865. 80 cm x 136 cm. Oil on canvas (2026) — The painting shows a group of people carrying Christ's body toward The tomb, while the woman follows behind them in grief. Ciseri organizes the figures in a horizontal movement across the painting, which makes the viewer's eyes follow the group toward the left side of the scene. The bright, yellow, red and blue clothing stands out against the muted landscape and helps separate the figures from one another while the darker clothing of the people carrying Christ creates a visual contrast with the brighter figures behind them.The partially covered body of Jesus also becomes an important focal point because the lighter fabric draws attention to his physical presence within the group. Ciseri created this work in the 19th century, when historical and religious paintings often emphasize dramatic, storytelling and emotional realism. These choices make the biblical event feel like a human experienceof grief rather than simply a religious story. In relation to my exhibition, the painting shows how color and composition can guide the viewers' attention and shape the emotional way we understand the representation of Jesus.
• Robert T. Barret, Christ Walking on the Water, date unknown. Dimensions unpublished, oil on canvas (2026) — The painting shows Jesus standing calmly in the center of the moving water while a boat, and the disciples appear behind him. The strong contrast between the deep blue water and the bright red and white of Jesus' clothing immediately separates him from the rest of the scene. This use of color reinforces his importance and makes him appear stable, even though the water around him is constantly moving. The bright light behind Jesus also creates a scene of hope and supports the biblical idea of Jesus as a divine figure who has power over nature.Because of the scene comes from the gospel story of Jesus, walking on water, the calm expression, open water and controlled posture can be understood as visual symbols of faith and trust during a difficult situation. I think these choices make the painting relatable because the contrast between Jesus' stillness and the movement of the water suggestthat faith can provide a sense of peace, even when circumstances are uncertain.
