• The Annunciation, Fra Angelico, 1438–1445, fresco, (1438) — The Annunciation depicts two people,Mary sitting down to right as she meets for the first time the archangel Gabriel wearing a long pink gown with colorful wings to support him. Fra Angelico uses the space around them and perspective in clever and powerful waves to help emphasize the focus on Mary and Gabriel. He uses the columns around them to both separate and connect the two together while also warping our perspective of the ground to make them appear bigger and grab our attention to focus on the two and the meaning behind this painting being the biblical moment when the Archangel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary she will give birth to Jesus. Fra Angelico was an Italian Dominican friar and painter active during the early Florentine Renaissance, painting exclusively religious subjects throughout his career. All of these pieces blend together to give us a beautiful visual representation of early religious themes of the renaissance and of these two historic figures meeting as well as the beginning of Jesus.
• Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Andrea Mantegna, c. 1480, Tempera on canvas (2026) — Lamentation over the Dead Christ, depicts the moment after Crucifixion and lowering of Christ's body from the cross as we see the dead Christ in bed with two figures above him mourning his death. This painting uses harsh perspectives to emphasize the focal point of Christ. The angle of the composition places the viewer at the feet of Christ as if we are in the room feeling the grief and weight of Christ’s death and sacrifice all the more impactful. Andrea Mantegna mastery of perspective and angles is vital to understanding this piece as we see these techniques used here. Overall this piece is an incredible representation of early renaissance that highlights perspective and angles to help emphasize realism this era was intertwined with.
• The Last Supper, Leonardo Da Vinci, c. 1495–1498, Tempera on gesso, pitch, and mastic, on wall plaster (2026) — The Last Supper depicts the moment after Christ tells his apostles of a betrayal as we see him sitting in the middle with the 12 apostles all giving their reaction and a long dinner table covered in food. Leonardo Da Vinci emphasis the focal point of Christ and the reaction of his apostles by using symmetry to give us a clear view of each reaction and the various degrees of anger and shock of his apostles, geometrical shaping emphasizing Christ's figure and his calmness, and lighting that creates a sense of divinity about Jesus. As a founding figure of the High Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci perfectly encapsulates themes of religion, psychological depth, and anatomical perfection that was seen all over during this period and in this painting. The goal of the Last Supper is to give us realistic psychological depth, off all 12 apostles' reactions and establish the foundation for Christian communion.
• David, Michelangelo, 1501-1504, statue created with Carrara marble (2026) — David is a historic large scale marble sculpture as we see him posed in anticipation for his battle with goliath. The sculpture uses scale to perfectly place the viewer at a perspective where you see the power and size of David, and shaping by depicting an S-curve across the torso that mimics classical Greek and Roman sculpture. These details help emphasize David and this tense moment before the battle. Placed outside the Palazzo Vecchio rather than a David became a powerful political statement rather than just a story. Michelangelo created an iconic sculpture that perfectly encapsulates the realism and anatomical correctness of the renaissance and gives us an amazing visual to the deep emotional psyche of David before his battle.
• The Deposition from the Cross, Jacopo Pontormo, c. 1525–1528, Tempera on wood (2026) — The Deposition from the Cross depicts the moments after the lowering and grieving of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion as we see people surrounding the body of Christ wearing bright contrasting colors. This picture has a lot of bright colors that creates contrast with the pale complexion of Christ that emphasizes his part in this painting. The vortex-like structure that goes down towards the body of Jesus emphasizes him even more. This piece perfectly encapsulates the dramatic stylistic shift we see from early to high renaissance to the late renaissance. All in all this piece is an amazing depiction of the death of Christ while also highlighting the shifts in techniques the late renaissance is defined by.
